Succulent Garden Terrarium Care

Updated: May 29, 2023

Succulent terrariums have become a popular addition to indoor gardening collections. These miniature landscapes composed of various succulent species create a beautiful and low-maintenance display in any home or office. While succulents are known for their hardiness, they still require certain care to thrive in the confined environment of a terrarium. In this guide, we will cover the basics of succulent terrarium care, from selecting the right container to watering and fertilizing your plants. With a little attention and care, your succulent terrarium can be a stunning and long-lasting addition to your indoor garden.

Watering

Succulents are not big fans of water, so it's important to avoid overwatering your terrarium. Only water your succulents when the soil feels dry to the touch or the bottom gravel layer is completely dry. When watering, make sure to target the soil and not the leaves, as this can cause rot.

Lighting

Succulents need bright, indirect light to flourish. Place your terrarium near a window that gets plenty of natural light, fluorescent light will also work just fine. If your succulents are not receiving enough light, they may become leggy and stretch towards the light source.

Temperature and Humidity

Most of succulents enjoy warmer temperatures and lower humidity. Keep your terrarium in a room with a temperature between 60-75°F (15-24°C). However, if the selection of succulents in your terrarium are cold tolerate, they can tolerate temperatures as low as 40°F but should be kept away from freezing temperatures. Avoid placing the terrarium near strong vents or in drafty areas.

Fertilizing

While succulents don't require a lot of fertilizer, you can feed them once a month during the growing season (spring and summer). Be careful not to over-fertilize, as this can lead to burning or other issues.

Pests and Diseases

Succulents are relatively resilient against pests and diseases, but they can still be vulnerable to certain issues. Common problems include mealybugs, spider mites, and root rot. To prevent these issues, keep your terrarium clean and maintain it regularly. If you notice any problems, address them immediately to prevent further damage.

Pruning and Propagating

If your succulents start to outgrow the container, feel free to trim them back. Use sharp, clean scissors or pruning shears to remove any excess growth. You can also remove any dead or damaged leaves or stems.

Succulents are easy to propagate, and you can use the new plants to expand your terrarium or create new ones. To do so, remove a healthy leaf or stem and let it dry for a few days. Once the cut end has calloused over, place the cutting in well-draining soil and water sparingly. In just a few weeks, you should start to see new growth.
